Compress your PDF to the exact size you need

Enter the maximum size the form asks for —2 MB, 5 MB, 10 MB— and we adjust the file until it fits. Everything happens inside your browser: we never upload your document to any server.

Compression tool

Need a specific size?

Pick the one you need: the tool opens with that target already set, plus an explanation of what quality to expect at that size.

How it works

  1. 1. Choose your PDFs

One or several. The files are read into the tab's memory: your documents are never sent over the network.

  2. 2. Set the maximum size

Type the limit the form asks for, in megabytes or kilobytes.

  3. 3. Download the result

We rasterize and recompress until the target is met, and give you each PDF separately, ready to attach.

Not sure why your PDF is so large? Give it an X-rayHow much of the size is images, fonts or text, which fonts it uses and its color palette. Also without uploading the file.

Frequently asked questions about compressing PDFs

Why do online forms ask for PDFs under 2 MB?

Online government and application portals limit the size of each attachment to control storage, upload time and the load on their servers. The most common limits are 2 MB, 5 MB and 10 MB per document, and the form usually rejects the whole submission if a single file is over. That's why it pays to compress to a specific size rather than compressing to “whatever comes out”.

Is it safe to compress my ID or personal documents here?

Yes. Compression runs entirely in your browser: the PDF is read from your disk into the tab's memory and the result is downloaded from there. Nothing is uploaded to any server, we keep no copies and you don't need to create an account.

How do you reach the exact size I ask for?

The engine doesn't apply a single compression: it tries, measures the resulting size and tries again. Each page is turned into a JPEG image and on every pass the resolution (DPI) and quality are adjusted until the file is below your target. When it gets there with room to spare, it tries a higher quality to land just under the target and lose as little as possible.

Can I compress several PDFs at once?

Yes. You can drop several files and set a single target size for all of them, which is typical when a form limits each attachment. They're compressed one after another, not simultaneously, so as not to exhaust the device's memory, and when it's done you can download them all at once: each PDF arrives separately, with no ZIP, ready to attach.

Can I split a PDF into several parts with a maximum size?

Yes. Tick “Split into several PDFs with a maximum size”, enter the size the form accepts (for example, 8 MB) and the tool splits the document into as many PDFs as needed, with the pages in order and untouched. Each part is measured before it's delivered, so none exceeds the maximum; if a single page is already over it, that page is compressed so it fits. Bear in mind that the parts add up to more than the original, because each one needs its own copy of the shared fonts and images; that a digital signature stops being valid when the file is split; and that password-protected PDFs can't be opened to split them.

Does the PDF lose quality when compressed?

Yes, it's lossy compression. The pages are rasterized and recompressed as images, so a very aggressive target shows mainly in photos and scans. For official paperwork (ID documents, payslips, scanned contracts) the result remains readable on screen and when printed at usual sizes.

Will the text still be selectable and searchable?

No. To reach a specific size, each page is turned into an image, so the text can no longer be selected, copied or searched inside the PDF. It looks the same and works for attaching to a form, but if you need to keep the text selectable, this tool isn't the right one. If your file already meets the target size, you get it back intact and untouched.

What happens if the size I ask for is impossible?

We give you the most compressed version we could achieve, together with a clear notice of the final size. A text-only PDF, for example, has a minimum below which it can't go without destroying the content.

Do I need to install anything or sign up?

No. You open the website, choose the file and download the result. There's no desktop software to install, no account to create and no email address to enter.

Does it work without an internet connection?

Yes. After the first visit, the browser keeps the app and its compression engine, so you can install it on your phone or computer and compress PDFs in airplane mode. It makes sense: since the work is done by your device and not by a server, no network is needed to compress.

Is there a file size limit?

We don't impose any artificial limit. The real limit is the memory available on your device, because the PDF is processed in the browser tab. A recent computer handles files of tens of megabytes without trouble; on older phones it's wise to be more careful.

How much does it cost?

Nothing. The tool is free and requires no sign-up.
